WHO calls 'Omicron' as 'variant of concern'

The World Health Organization (WHO) on Saturday named the new COVID-19 variant B.1.1.529, which has been detected in South Africa, as 'Omicron'. This came after the WHO held a meeting to discuss the newly-identified COVID-19 variant.

The World Health Organization on Friday alarmed the siren among countries after a new variant of COVID-19 has been classified in South Africa, the Swiss Federal Office of Public Health (FOPH) said in a statement.

"The recently discovered variant of coronavirus B.1.1.529 is of concern. It has more mutations than science knows about other alarming variants. The WHO has assessed this new variant as worrisome," the statement said.

"Existing coronavirus vaccines may be less effective against the new COVID-19 variant, the statement added.

The FOPH also informed that the new variant is more transmissible than the "delta" strain, which previously became globally dominant.

This variant has been labelled as B.1.1.529 by scientists.

WHO spokesperson Christian Lindmeier said after the meeting that early analysis shows that this variant has a large number of mutations that require and will undergo further study.

Kalam's biographer has fond memories of his Guru

Shreshtha Tiwari/Chennai Scientist Nellai S Muthu worked with Dr APJ Abdul Kalam for 40 years from 1963 to 1980. While Dr Kalam was the project director at ISRO, Muthu joined as a scientist in 1973. They remained in touch with each other even after Dr Kalam had moved to DRDO. Muthu has written and translated four books on Kalam. Muthu translated Kalam’s  India 2020 vision  in Tamil and also wrote a biography of Dr Kalam. He is one of the members of the Advisory board of the APJ Abdul Kalam Foundation. Srinagar Church restoration brings hope to Valley

Ehsan Fazili/Srinagar   In restoring and conserving a dilapidated, abandoned, and decaying Church, the Srinagar Municipal Corporation has not only revived a place of worship for the handful of local Christians but also preserved Valley’s architectural heritage and traditions of harmony. The 125-year-old Saint Luke’s Church in Dal Gate area, close to the Lake by that name, will have its first mass for the devout on Christmas after 30 years. The carol singing happened at its online inauguration by Lt Governor Manoj Sinha. The church was built in 1896 on the southwest slope of Shri Shankaracharya Hill on top of which is located the famous Shiva temple.   According to Athar Aamir Khan, Commissioner, Srinagar Municipality, a lot of credit for the restoration of this building goes to local artisans who reworked the Khatamband ceiling of this church, a unique feature of local art.
