Kashmiri militant surrenders on police appeal

A Kashmiri youth who had joined a terrorist group Hizbul Mujahideen in March surrendered while his associate was killed in a gunfight in Hanjipora Kachdora village of south Kashmir's Shopian last evening.

The surrendered person identified as Sameer trusted the police that had surrounded his hideout in the village and made an appeal to him to surrender. 

As is the practice in the security forces, they give a chance to the local militants to surrender. In this case, too his parents were brought to the venue of the encounter and made to appeal to him to give up his arms and surrender.

In the small video clip posted on the Social media platform Twitter, the police are seen addressing Sameer and assuring him that no harm will happen to him in case he chose to live.

The policeman speaking in Kashmir is assuring Sameer that no case will be registered against him not will he be subjected to any harassment if he chooses to give up arms and surrenders.

The police later said Sameer surrendered while his other associatedidentified as Murtaza Ahmad Dar of Samboora, Pulwama, was killed in the gunfight.

"While one of the militants continued to fire on the forces, his associate Sahil Ahmad of Bemmipora village finally changed his mind and gave in,” said the Police.

Another official said that the gun-battle started after columns of army's 34 RR, CRPF and police laid a siege around Hanjipora Kachdora village district on Friday afternoon.

"While the operation was in progress, the militants hiding in the area opened fire on the forces triggering off an encounter, which ended with the killing of one militant,” said the police official.

A police spokesperson in a statement said that 1 rifle, 1 pistol, 2 grenades were recovered.

According to the statement, IGP Kashmir Vijay Kumar “congratulated the security forces for showing utmost patience and exhibiting professionalism by taking the surrender of an active militant during a live encounter."

Kalam's biographer has fond memories of his Guru

Shreshtha Tiwari/Chennai Scientist Nellai S Muthu worked with Dr APJ Abdul Kalam for 40 years from 1963 to 1980. While Dr Kalam was the project director at ISRO, Muthu joined as a scientist in 1973. Srinagar Church restoration brings hope to Valley

Ehsan Fazili/Srinagar   In restoring and conserving a dilapidated, abandoned, and decaying Church, the Srinagar Municipal Corporation has not only revived a place of worship for the handful of local Christians but also preserved Valley’s architectural heritage and traditions of harmony. The 125-year-old Saint Luke’s Church in Dal Gate area, close to the Lake by that name, will have its first mass for the devout on Christmas after 30 years. The carol singing happened at its online inauguration by Lt Governor Manoj Sinha.
